The short answer: yes, bring your dog
Center Hill Lake can make an excellent dog trip. The region has wooded trails, overlooks, outdoor tables and plenty of room to slow down. But “dog-friendly” does not mean dogs can go everywhere. Leashes are the norm, designated swim beaches prohibit pets, and summer pavement, ticks, steep bluffs and fast-moving water deserve real respect.
Good outdoor adventures with a dog
Edgar Evins State Park
Wooded trails and lake overlooks make this a natural first choice. Keep dogs leashed, carry water and watch footing near roots, drop-offs and shoreline areas.
Rock Island State Park
A beautiful outing for a trail-ready dog, but the terrain and water can be serious. Stay on marked routes, obey closure signs and never let a dog enter fast current near falls or generators.
Burgess Falls State Park
The overlook trail is a memorable leashed walk. Expect stairs, crowds and limited shade in places. Give other hikers room and keep dogs well back from railings and cliff edges.
Virgin Falls & Lost Creek
Lost Creek offers a shorter waterfall stop; Virgin Falls is a demanding backcountry day. Take more water than you think you need, check weather and trail conditions, and skip long hikes in high heat.
Eat without leaving the dog behind
These are useful dog-trip options because they offer outdoor service, carhop-style ordering or seasonal patios. Always call first, especially outside summer.
Bumpers Drive-In · Smithville
Carhop service and outdoor tables make this one of the simplest local meals with a dog. Your dog can stay beside you outdoors or remain with you at the car.
Twisted Oaks · Dowelltown
A family-owned restaurant reported to welcome leashed dogs on its partially covered patio. Confirm patio availability before making the short drive.
El Lago · Center Hill Marina
A waterfront option where dogs are reported welcome on the spacious covered patio. Marina restaurants often keep seasonal hours, so verify before heading out.
Cotten's Marina / On The River Grill · Rock Island
A seasonal outdoor meal that pairs naturally with a Rock Island outing. Dogs are reported welcome at outdoor tables; confirm operating dates and pet access.
The Grill at Smooth Rapids · McMinnville
River views, outdoor seating and a campground setting make this a practical dog-friendly side trip.
Takeout picnic
When patio rules are uncertain, pick up food in Smithville and use a shaded picnic area where leashed pets are allowed. It is often easier—and calmer for the dog—than a crowded restaurant.

South Paw Bed & Bath · Smithville
A long-established local boarding and grooming facility with indoor/outdoor accommodations. Boarding dogs must meet its vaccination and flea/tick requirements; females in heat are not accepted. Reserve ahead and wait for confirmation.
Animal Clinic of Smithville
A local option for veterinary care. Call before arriving, particularly for same-day or urgent needs, and ask where to go after hours.
Smithville Walmart · 515 W Broad St
A convenient stop for dog food, bowls, leashes, waste bags, shampoo, bedding and basic flea/tick supplies. The official store listing identifies a full pet department.
Bring records with you
Keep a photo or PDF of rabies and vaccination records on your phone. Boarding facilities may require Bordetella and other current vaccines, and having records ready can save a vacation day.

The Little Lake House welcomes approved dogs
The Little Lake House gives dog owners a private wooded home base close to Center Hill Lake, with direct-booking support from the same host who created Tony's Guide.
Current dog policy
- Prior approval is required.
- One dog up to 40 pounds, or two dogs not exceeding 60 pounds combined.
- $60 pet fee per dog.
- Larger or additional dogs may be considered case by case.
- Dogs must be crated whenever left unattended inside the cabin.
- Please keep pets off furniture when possible.

- Pet fees do not cover damage, stains, odors, excessive shedding or extra cleaning.
- Service animals are welcomed as required by law.
- Tell Tony about your dog before booking so approval and fees are handled correctly.
